Usman Ramzan of PEC, in an interview with BBC Gujarati, spoke about disability rights. He attended a meeting which was organised by Mazdoor Adhikar Manch in collaboration with Mahiti Adhikar Gujarat Pahel.
The workers present at the meeting were taught how to use the Right to Information (RTI). Usmanbhai also brought up many issues troubling workers like the government not making full use of the cess taken in the name of workers, how the police do not register a complaint when a worker meets with an accident, inability to make a claim due to non-registration of FIR.
Other issues like workers not getting their benefits due to the government not promoting the Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana properly. Moreover, work done by the organisation during the pandemic was also discussed.
Usmanbhai also raised a few questions and suggestions during the meeting:
- A common portal or phone number that will help address problems that workers have directly to the organisation.
- Transferring cases of violence against women workers to the concerned organisation(s) that work specifically on such cases.
- Why do children of workers in the unorganised sector do not get benefits under the Right to Education (RTE) Act.
Based on this meeting and the questions/suggestions, BBC Gujarati interviewed Usmanbhai.
